TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale jolted Jakarta this afternoon (15/1) at 02.11 pm. According to the Meteorological and Geophysics Agency (BMG) Operational Chief Sunaryo, the epicenter of quake was located in the Sunda Straits, 180 km from Jakarta, 20 km below the sea, at 06.38 South Latitude and 105.19 East Longitude with 2 MMI (Modified Mercantile Intensity). Sunaryo said the jolts measured around 3 MMI (Modified Mercantile Intensity) in Merak, Pandeglang and nearby areas in West Java. He also told TEMPO that he has yet to receive any reports on any losses caused by the earthquake. Mastur, another BMG official said the quake’s length could not be predicted properly due to difficulties caused by the height of the areas affected by the quake. “The higher an area is, the longer the jolts. Some people claimed they had felt the jolts for 10 seconds on the 15th floor of their building. If these people were on the ground floor, they probably would have felt the jolts for about 2 or 3 seconds,” Mastur explained.
