Jamaah Islamiyah Leader Arrested in Riau

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The National Police arrested one of the leaders of the Jamaah Islamiyah organization leaders in Tanjung Pinang, Riau, on Sunday (2/2) evening. National Police Chief of Detectives, Commissioner General Erwin Mapasseng, announced the arrest, which was made at the request of the Singapore Police, following a working meeting with Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) in Jakarta on Monday (3/2). The Jamaah Islamiyah leader, Mas Slamet bin Kastari, is a Singapore citizen and an Interpol fugitive. He is on Interpols red notice list as he was allegedly involved in planning to hijack an airplane from Bangkok to Singapore. However, Mapasseng did not give details of when this happened. At 7:45 p.m. on Sunday, Slamet was with his wife and children when the police arrested him and took him to the Riau Police Headquarters. The police found Slamets identity card and fake passport documents. He spent Rp2 million to get [the fake documents], Mapasseng said and added that the documents were made in Bengkalis. So far, the National Police have accused Slamet of making fake documents and have not uncovered any other crimes during his time in Indonesia. Mapasseng said the suspect did not convey any details about his involvement in Jamaah Islamiyah. [The National Police] and also Singapore have data about his involvement, he said.
