TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:President Abdurrahman Wahid has stated that political instability and security concerns are the main reasons behind the plunge of the rupiah and the Indonesian Composite Stock Price Index. To overcome the problems, the President called for all parties to support political stability and security. President Wahid made this statement in a dialogue with businessmen at the Sahid Hotel in Jakarta last night (26/4). President Wahid was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Rizal Ramli at the time.

According to the President, the biggest obstacles that the Government currently faces are the currency market and the stock market. The situation, he said, will be very much influenced by security and political instability, problems with the bureaucracy and with the tax and customs systems.” All those systems must be improved,” President Wahid said in the opening of the dialogue.

The President said that the security situation has been gradually recovering. “Not long from now, we will enjoy the feeling of being safe,” he said. He thought that both legislative and executive levels of government should seek to find solutions in support of better economic growth. “The current administration is focusing on two things, which are the draft Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Law and the draft Special Autonomy Law for Irian Jaya. The House of Representatives (DPR) is still debating the drafts. Hopefully, the discussions will be settled at the end of this May,” he said. The drafts need to be prioritized and resolved so that they do not continue to divert the Government’s resources.

President Wahid considered the problem of political instability is already settled. Both executive and legislative levels seek to find a peaceful solution to improve the national economic growth.
