TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Ministry of Foreign Affairs Information Director Drs Sulaiman Abdulmanan MA announced that although the House of Representatives (DPR) party leaders rejected the government’s request to delay the May 30, 2001 DPR Plenary Session the government will not cancel the holding of a G-15 Summit that is to take place on the same day. “Although the DPR insists on holding the plenary session, the G-15 Summit will continue,” Sulaiman told Tempo this afternoon (17/5).

According to Sulaiman, Indonesia’s appointment as the host of a G-15 Summit was decided two years ago, and that “We are no longer able to delay the holding of the summit,” Sulaiman said in Timika, Irian Jaya, where he’s currently on a work related visit.

Sulaiman said that Indonesia is one of three Asian countries that have become members of the G-15. Of the Asian countries, Indonesia is the only one who has never hosted the summit, while Malaysia and India both have. Therefore, Sulaiman expected that people would not overstate the tension that might occur during the holding of the summit.

The 11th G-15 Summit is scheduled to take place at the Jakarta Convention Center and be attended by representatives of Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, India, Iran, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, Egypt, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Three of these countries are invited to send their minister of foreign affairs to monitor the development of the G-15 countries.
