The President added that he only review thegovernment’s performance at the end of his term in2004. “The Special Session need not raise therelationships between the executive, legislative andjudiciary. Besides, this should not be allowed tobecome an evaluative decree against the President andthe government. I am confident that the MPR will notdo this,” the President said. He made this commentwhen responding to a question about the recentissuance of a memorandum of censure against thePresident that led the MPR to hold a special session.
Responding to a question about what stance he wouldtake if the special session led to a demand that hestep down, the President answered that he has todefend the Indonesia’s territorial integrity. “Asstated in the 1945 Constitution, I was appointed to bethe president to defend the Indonesian territory.Secondly, I have a responsibility to maintain thefreedom of Indonesia, to develop the mentality of thenation, to join in efforts for international peace, justice and prosperity. These are my responsibilities,no one else's,” President Wahid said.
As such, Abdurrahman Wahid added that an attack uponthe President is the equivalent of an attack uponIndonesia’s integrity, so he, the President, has todefend the state's territory.
