The letter also stated that Tommy’s surrender would enable clarification of the accusations made against him by the police regarding his role in the recent bombings in Jakarta. “This event has surprised me and I hope all will go as planned,” Sofyan said.
Sofyan made assurances that as soon as Tommy surrenders himself the cases implicating him will be addressed immediately. Amongst other things, this would involve sending Tommy to Cipinang Penitentiary in Jakarta.
Meanwhile, National Police Chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro said that the search for Tommy continues, especially now that he is the chief suspect for the assassination of Supreme Court justice Syafiuddin Kartasasmita. “We will chase him and we'll get him,” Bimantoro told the press today (10/8).
National Police Chief Gen. Surojo Bimantoro said that the police have accepted the offer of the Suharto family. But, the police are still continuing the search for Tommy, who is believed to have changed his name to Ibrahim. Bimantoro stated, "In order to safeguard the investigations, I I need not mention our strategies for finding Tommy or any other technical matters.”
Bimantoro added that the police have not fixed the deadline for the search. “I don’t think we need to fix any deadlines. The most important thing is that we can arrest him and carry out the legal procedures on him as soon as possible,” Bimantoro said.
Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Gen. (ret.) Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono also supported the measures taken by the police. Yudhoyono requested the broader society to support the police in dealing with these crimes. “We can not let people get off lightly for bombings, terrorisation, political assassination or street fighting,” he said.
