18 September 2003 10:45 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Delaying theprivatization of some state-owned enterprises (BUMN)has apparently led to a 2.5-percent deficit in the2002 State Budget. Minister of State Enterprises(BUMN) Laksamana Sukardi announced this at thelegislature complex in Jakarta today (1/11).

Sukardi said that the delay of BUMNs privatizationwas due to several factors. Security was one of themost important factors in this process. The changingsituation of the global economy was also hampering theprocess.

The threatened sweepings in Indonesia has changedpublic opinion on Indonesias image as unsafe,Sukardi said. Uncertain law enforcement is alsoconsidered a serious problem for this privatizationprocess.

Therefore, Sukardi expects that all stake holders ofthe state-owned enterprises, including the governmentand the House of Representatives (DPR), must supportthe settlement of the process.

Sukardi said that the government should refrain fromincreasing the state expenses or borrowing more money.
