Fishing Technology in Indonesia Left Far Behind

6 February 2004 23:54 WIB

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Fishing technology in Indonesia has been left far behind, Minister of Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Rokhmin Dahuri told reporters in Jakarta on Friday (6/2). Currently, said the minister, the fishing structure and fleets in Indonesia are still far behind those of Thailand, Philippines, Japan and Korea. According to Dahuri, there are currently 5,200 modern fishing boats, or 1.2 percent of the total 470,000 fishing boats in Indonesia, while traditional fishing boats amount to 260,000. He said that the losses suffered by the state due to fish stealing by foreign ships has reached the amount of 1.5 million tons of fish, worth between US$2.5 and US$4 billion. Currently, only 1,000 ships operate in Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEE) under special license and they have to pay huge amounts of tax. The Ministry of Fisheries is currently making attempts to modernize Indonesia’s fishing ships. “If we just do nothing, there will be more fish stolen by foreign fishermen,” stated Dahuri. He said he expected that the improvement of fishing skills and equipment plus the tightening of maritime security could help improve the fish industry in Indonesia. Mawar Kusuma - Tempo News Room
