TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta : Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani insisted on Monday that the funds taken from Bank Mandiri on August 27th belonged to the government, despite the Supreme Court decision to review the case.

Tommy Soeharto, the youngest son of the late Indonesia's second president, Soeharto was planning to file a lawsuit against the Finance Minister for authorizing the seizure of the funds.

“It was government's funds, let's leave the matter on Tommy to the Attorney General (Office),” Mulyani said

The Rp 1,2 trillion funds were colaterals of PT Timor Putra Nasional owned by Tommy Soeharto. The funds were initially placed in several banks which then merged to become Bank Mandiri. The 1997 financial crisis have put many local bank out of business, forcing the government to merge or bail the banks. The banks were then required to return the liquidity assistance by set-off mechanism. “The deal to set-off the debt has been signed with the Indonesian Bank Restructuring Agency,” Mulyani said.
