TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Conflict between Sunni and Shia followers is nothing new. Such conflict has been going on for thousands of years and has occurred in other countries beside Indonesia. Therefore, scholar Jalaluddin Rakhmat, or Kang Jalal, as he is amicably known, says the Sunni-Shia conflict is not a localized problem but an international issue. When Tempo visited Kang Jalals residence on Thursday, August 29, the man shared his story about Shia in Indonesia, covering how the teachings spread, conflict, ways of worship, and the threats that Shiites are facing. The following is the sixth part of that conversation between Tempo reporters Choirul Aminuddin, Erwin Zachri, Cornila Desyana, Praga Utama and the chairman of the Shura Council of the Indonesian Jamaa Ahl ul-Bayt Association (IJABI).You said Sampang attack was staged. Was it by a new movement? No, the movement has undergone a long process and multiple stages. Before they attacked Shiites, they attacked the Ahmadiyah followers and they succeeded. But why would they try to eliminate Shiites? What are the benefits?Plenty. Locally, a religious figure in East Java said it was not matter of opnion but a matter of income. Some received funds or a car while other did not. That triggers conflict. On the other hand, some said that Ustad Tajul Muluk often provides recitation without receiving payments. The tradition in Madura is that ustad usually receives an envelope after giving a recitation. According to my analysis, some ustad may find Ustad Tajuls action to be undermining the market. That is my conclusion.Tajul also built a treatment center for the sick and provided assistance in times of natural disasters. As a result, people favored him and his followers grew. For ustads in a small region, losing one follower could cause problems. If many followers turn away from the recitation group that is a big problem. That is from a local scope. What about the national perspective? They want to make Indonesia unsafe, to make the exsiting government sleepless. Was the Shia conflict in Sampang the biggest?Yes, for Indonesia. It is now beyond Rois [brother of Tajul Muluk and suspect in the attack againt Shiites in Sampang] control. The conflict has grown so big and I think Rois should be punished. He was the one who attacked.
