TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, is enjoying a tremendous popularity. He has yet to pass his first year as governor, but popular opinions are said to support the former Solo Mayor to run for president in 2014.
Party elites are divided. Indonesian Democratic Party–Struggle (PDI-P), Widodo's supporting party, considers two alternatives. Some requests Widodo to focus on the capital until his term ends in 2017. Others, including PDI-P Fraction Head in Parliament Puan Maharani, admits that Widodo's popularity makes way for many new options.
The results of a survey held by Tempo.co and Yahoo! Indonesia portal last week shows that the majority of the people gives Widodo approval to run for president next year.
Yet, there is 43 percent in Tempo.co and nearly 40 percent in Yahoo! who believes that Widodo should not be hasty in going for the Head of State. Complete results could be read on Tempo Magazine, Monday, June 10, 2013 edition.
