TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - DKI Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo, a.k.a. Jokowi, is popular for he made a number of breakthroughs such as the auction of head of village and sub district's positions, publishing Jakarta Health Cards, modifying low-cost apartment buildings, cleaning North Jakarta's Pluit reservoir, and went on field inspections almost all the time.
Though seen as a populist, an observer from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), Philips J. Vermonte, evaluated Jokowi's leadership style. Philips claimed that Jokowi still used old-fashioned leadership style, same as the previous governors did. "Only it was delivered with a different package," he said to Tempo last weekend.
According to him, Jokowi positioned himself as a 'hero' who was able to solve any kind of problems the capital faced. Whereas, Jokowi should be a leader that is able to ask other elements of society to join him in developing his programs for Jakarta's development, such as The Indonesian Physicians Association (IDI), for the Jakarta Health Card case.
"Jokowi was supposed to lead in 'more-than-just-Jokowi' style. He needed to be a leader that could empower and inspire different groups of people," Philips concluded.
