TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Secretary General of the Democratic Party, Andi Nurpati, said that a number of his party members have tried to persuade Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo to attend the party's convention of presidential candidates. These cadres, he said, have "guerrillaed" to many figures.
"There are people who communicate with Jokowi," he told Tempo on Sunday, July 7. Jokowi, he said, is not the only figure who had been approached by Democrat cadres. Other figures include Chairman of the House of Representatives, Marzuki Alie, and Chairman of the Regional Advisory Council, Irman Gusman.
A survey conducted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies in 31 provinces from April 9 to 16 suggested that Jokowi--should he run for president--is a very popular candidate. A total of 28.6 percent of respondents said they would choose capital's governor. The second most popular candidate is Gerindra party's Prabowo Subianto, bagging 15.6 percent of the respondents' vote.
