TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said he is ashamed with the capital's public transportation system. He claimed to have always been out of words when discussing public transportation facilities with governments from other countries.
That's why, he said, he wants to speed-up the mass rapid transit (MRT) and monorail projects. "Even if it's just one kilometer--it is important that we have an MRT or a monorail, so I can show off when there are guests from other countries," Jokowi said at the Faculty of Economy, University of Indonesia on Monday, July 8.
Jokowi said that MRT and monorail are urgently needed to address Jakarta's traffic congestion. He reasoned that the growth of car and motorcycle purchases have reached a concerning point.
"Every day there are 440 new cars and 1,400 new motorcycles in Jakarta. Imagine the traffic if we don't rival [the purchases] with MRT and monorail," he said.
