TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta administration says it has crafted a new strategy to suppress the number of newcomers in the post-Eid al Fitr influx into the capital. This time, the Jakarta government plans on conducting population development activities to replace the clampdown operations it has launched in the past few years.
“We have prepared a new strategy. There won’t be any clampdown operations, but there will be population development activities,” said Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo during in an interview in Kemanggisan Raya area, Sunday, August 4.
The governor said the decision to organize the population development stemmed from the reflection on the clampdown operations in the last few years, which had failed to yield significant upshots.
“We haven’t seen the results after all this years and Jakarta’s population keeps on growing. We should replace it with another strategy. Now we have the population development activity, but we cannot see the results yet. If it still doesn’t work, we will try another strategy,” Jokowi said.
The governor declined to comment much on the newcomers issue, saying that there will be no problems as long as everyone is abiding by the regulations. “We already have regulations. People have to bring ID cards and other required migration references. Just comply with those regulations,” the governor said.
