TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On the first workday after the Idul Fitri holiday, Monday, Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo visited the Tanah Abang Market.
Jokowi said he wanted to have a first-hand look at the market's readiness to receive an abundance of street vendors. As reported yesterday, the municipal police have dismantled all hawker stalls in Tanah Abang, Sunday, August 11.
The governor said that his visit was also to check on the market's sewers, claiming he received reports of clogging that resulted in foul odor. In addition, the clogged sewer also caused flooding during heavy rains.
"The water is blocked because the sewer was never maintained," said Jokowi.
Joko did not go up to the top floor of Block G where traders' registration process was ongoing. He only walked around to monitor the renovation process at the Block. According to Jokowi, the gate to Block G is being completed at a factory, and will be brought for installation.
