TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The G Block of Tanah Abang Market, the area to which the Jakarta administration relocated street vendors from Jl. Jati Baru, will be inaugurated on Monday, August 3, 2013. Jakarta Governor is scheduled to attend the inauguration, which will begin at 9.00 local time.
“The last drawing of kiosks was done on Saturday, while vendors on the upper floors will prepare the kiosks on Sunday. The opening ceremony will be impressive,” the governor said when visiting the block on Thursday, August 29, 2013.
Jokowi said all of the kiosks were already packed so trading should commence immediately. He added that the drawing of around 300 kiosks at the block, which would take place at the Central Jakarta Mayor’s office, was aimed at helping each of the vendors get a kiosk.
The governor said his administration would carry out a series of promotions for the block as he promised earlier. “We will promote this block so people would be familiar with the block and know that goods there are cheap,” the governor said.
A series of cultural events will highlight the inauguration of the block and the media were invited. Jokowi has pledged he would place advertisements in newspapers and on radio to promote the block together with the Ministry of Communication and Information.
The registration of vendors at the G Block has begun since mid July 2013. The Jakarta administration opened a second registration for another 340 kiosks following soaring demands from vendors. The vendors were only required to submit their ID and family cards to register themselves.
Although the registration was open to vendors in general, the Jakarta administration said it would give priority to the relocated vendors at the market.
