TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said he planned on imposing mandatory study hall hours on students to prevent them from engaging in negative activities outside school.
“But this is not a curfew. It’s different,” Jokowi said after attending the Religious Interpretation Assembly event at the Senayan Sports Center with Vice President Boediono on Sunday.
The governor added this program, which aimed at disciplining students, would bar students from skipping classes without reasonable excuses, thus preventing them from wandering around the streets during school hours. “It sounds like the present regulation,” he said, but explained this regulation would help monitor students’ activities outside school.
The governor said the current regulation was loose as evident by the fact many students were still spotted being outside school during school sessions, and they were captured only when they stirred up commotions or during raids.
The governor said he would solicit input from stakeholders prior to ratifying the regulation. “We need to talk to the Education Agency, school committees, and parents,” he said. Jokowi said teachers should encourage their students to study harder and called on parents to avoid spoiling their children.
