TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that the prolonged transportation problem in the capital will be worsened with the presence of the low cost green cars (LCGC).
"Streets in Jakarta will be a complete chaos," said Jokowi during an education dialog in Jakarta on Saturday, 21 September 2013. "Jakarta will surely be most affected," he added.
Jokowi acknowledged that he had no problem with the cheap cars as long as mass transportation in Jakarta is ready so that traffic congestion could be reduced. However, Jokowi added, Indonesia, including Jakarta, is already late in building mass transportation systems.
"If the mass transportation is ready, even the existence of private cars won't be a problem in the streets," Jokowi said.
In the meantime, Vice President Boediono said that the cheap cars will 'only' add the number of existing cars by 3 percent. He said that the central government will take measures to address traffic congestion issues. The central government and the Jakarta administration have agreed on ways to solve traffic congestion without stopping or limiting the production of cheap cars.
