TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nirwono Joga, a spatial planning expert of the Trisakti University, said the Jakarta administration had begun to display good performance under the leadership of Governor Joko Widodo and Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. Unfortunately, he added, the city officials’ performance relied heavily on the governor.
“If Jokowi leaves, the development of Jakarta could stop,” Nirwono said on Tuesday, October 15, 2013.
Nirwono said the work awareness of city officials at the technical level, such as the city’s agencies, was still low. He took for example the relocation of street vendors at the Tanah Abang Market, which was not followed by other vendor relocations in other areas.
“So far, the city programs are running because of Jokowi’s effect as opposed to the city official’s initiatives,” he said. “Whereas actually Jokowi’s acts should have encouraged officials in the city, sub-districts, and urban villages.”
Nirwono said he was appreciative of the governor’s and the deputy governor’s performance, who managed to launch the Kartu Jakarta Sehat health cards, the Kartu Jakarta Pintar education cards, restore water reservoirs and relocate residents around the reservoirs within a year. He suggested, however, Jokowi find a way to encourage his bureaucrats to improve their performance.
