TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo inaugurated today the construction of the green line monorail project stretching from Semanggi to Sudirman. Recently, the governor also inaugurated the capital’s much-anticipated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) project.
“This is all aimed at providing people with more options of public transports,” Jokowi said on Wednesday, October 16, 2013. On this occasion, the governor also apologized to the people as the monorail construction would temporarily exacerbate the capital’s already chaotic traffic.
Jokowi said one of the causes of Jakarta’s traffic congestion was the lack of public transports, which also prompted people to prefer private vehicles.
The ground-breaking ceremony took place in the area of Setia Budi Utara, around Tugu 66. The green line will extend 11 kilometers from Sudirman Dukuh Atas-Setiabudi Utara-Kuningan Sentral-Taman Rasuna-Casablanca-Gran Melia-Gatot Subroto-Satria Mandala-Komdak-SCBD-Gelora Bung Karno-Jl. Asia Afrika-Stadion Madya-Palmerah-Karet-Dukuh Atas.
Consortium PT Jakarta Monorail has teamed up with Chinese contractor China Communications Construction Company Ltd (CCCC) to construct the green line. The construction, which spends around US$1.5 billion or around Rp15-16 trillion, is estimated to finish in three years.
