TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo said he would personally supervise the newly-inaugurated construction of the capital’s monorail project. “There are three things that need to be supervised: the legal, financial, and technical aspects,” Jokowi said on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in Jakarta.
The governor called on people to be optimistic the Rp15 trillion-worth project would proceed without a hitch. He said he had formed a special team spearheaded by the Regional Development Agency to oversee the monorail construction. The team also involved personnel from the Public Works Agency and the Spatial Planning Agency, he said.
Jokowi said he would ensure the project, carried out by consortium PT Jakarta Monorail, would be a success. He said he had scrutinized the financial ability of investors in the project, which was the reason he signed the contract to continue the once-halted transport project.
The construction of the monorail project began in 2004. The majority shares were initially owned by state construction company PT Adhi Karya Tbk, which also owns 7.65 percent of PT Jakarta Monorail shares.
PT Adhi Karya later sold its Jakarta Monorail shares, which were bought up by Singapore-based Ortus Infrastructure Capital Ltd in April 2013. Ortus, owned by business tycoon Edward Soeryawidjaya, is now the majority shareholder of the capital’s monorail.
