TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo supports a number of revisions stated in the 2013 Curriculum. One such revision is the removal of English classes from the curriculum of Elementary Schools.
He said it would be better to teach English to Junior High School students, so that primary students have more sense of nationalism.
In the 2013 Curriculum, three subjects have been removed from the regular curriculum for primary students— English, Physical Education, along with Information Technology and Computer. The subjects will become extracurricular subjects, and they will not be included in examinations.
The removal of English will be carried out periodically. This year, only grades one and two do not have English classes. In 2014-2015, it will no longer be taught in grades one, two, three and four.
In the following year, 2015-2016, grades one, two, three, four and five, and then in 2016-2017, no grade will receive English classes.
