TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo expressed his concerns over the limited number of garbage trucks in Jakarta. Last December, the city administration purchased 92 new trucks to be deployed to five areas in Jakarta. However, the number is still far below the required 400 units.
Jakarta City Administration had actually planned to purchase 200 garbage trucks. The City Council, however, rejected the proposal. "I don’t understand why," Jokowi said. "Budgeting rights are with the Council. We simply make proposals."
Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) previously lamented the rejection, saying that some trucks are too old to still operate. Ahok added that garbage has become a significant threat in Jakarta, especially during floods. "If there are no garbage trucks, residents will resort to littering in the river."
