TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Governor Joko Widodo is surprised by how youths, especially in schools, have lost empathy for others.

Jokowi said that schools should be able to increase the students' social awareness. "Don't just play twitter, facebook, path, and instagram," Jokowi said in front of school principals appointed through auctions on Wednesday.

Jokowi also explained that school principals must be able to educate students not only in formal lessons but also in understanding their surroundings.

He hoped that the auction winners must have creativity, including in making school building plan. "Schools need to be improved," he said.

The auction process for positions in Jakarta such as school principal, district chief, sub-district chief has been carried out by Jokowi since 1.5 years ago. According to Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok), those positions must be held by competent individuals.

Ahok said that many previous officials appointed in certain positions were not capable in their tasks. "Through auctions, only those who are competent will be chosen," he said.
