Use Labor Protest Cost to Buy Ambulance, Jokowi Suggests

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle's (PDIP) presidential candidate, Joko Widodo, said it is better if do not hold protests on International Labor Day, which is today, May 1. However, he said that he respects workers' decision to hold protest as it their right.
"There should not be any protest during Labor Day. Protests cost money. Instead of holding protests, the money would be better spent on other things," he in front of workers at his official residence in Menteng, Thursday, May 1.
The man also known as Jokowi suggested using the cost of protest to buy ambulance for workers, saying that having a special ambulance will help sick workers. "The cost for demonstration is better spent on buying a special ambulance for workers; using the money collected. But, if they prefer to hold protests instead, it's okay," he said.
This morning, Jokowi received about 20 workers who are members of Women's Action Committee. The workers met Jokowi for about 60 minutes, expressing their hope that Jokowi will fight for domestic workers' rights including health protection and wages. The workers also hoped that outsourcing will be abolished.
