TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Gunawan, the executive chairman at the Indonesian Human Rights Committee for Social Justice (IHCS), said president-elect Joko "Jokowi" Widodo’s government transition team must evaluate some ministerial posts.

“Evaluating government agencies is important because democratic consolidation in a democratic transition period requires institutional strengthening,” said Gunawan on Tuesday.

According to Gunawan, the inauguration of the transition office would ease the power transition from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyno to his sucessor, President Jokowi.

He added this transition would also help Jokowi get familiar with Yudhoyono's ongoing tasks. “This is a momentum for Jokowi’s transition team to monitor and evaluate [the tasks] as well as make plans.”

Gunawan said some of Yudhoyono’s tasks that Jokowi needed to continue was the establishment of an institution in the food sector, which was regulated under the food law. This law also governed issues on agrarian reform and land dispute settlement.

Gunawan added the Farmers Protection and Empowerment Law had mandated the government to ease access to state-owned lands for farmers. He said Jokowi also needed to evaluate the legal and institutional products that failed to end agrarian conflicts. The Mineral and Coal Law also orders the Yudhoyono administration to renegotiate mining contracts.

Jokowi inaugurated yesterday the Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla Transition Office on Situbondo Street, Menteng, Central Jakarta. This office will become the headquarters of Jokowi's transition team, which is spearheaded by its chief of staff, Rini Soemarni. The team member comprises Anies Baswedan, Hasto Kritiyanto, Akbar Faizal and Andi Widjajanto. The team's task is to help Jokowi and Jusuf Kalla prepare government programs and select the people that would be appointed as ministers.
