TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta’s Regional Legislative Council, or DPRD, has officially accepted Joko Widodo’s resignation as governor, clearing the way for him to assume his role as Indonesia’s next president, as reported by Antara News.
At a council plenary meeting on Monday, nine factions agreed to the request, including four aligned with Prabowo Subianto’s Red-and-White coalition, which did not attend a meeting to approve the request last Tuesday.
“We’d like to wish him well on taking his new duty as president of the Republic of Indonesia,” said Zainuddin, who leads the Red-and-White-aligned Golkar Party at the DPRD.
Zainuddin said he hoped Joko could help Indonesia become a more just, developed and prosperous nation.
The Democrat Party and the National Mandate Party (PAN) suggested Joko file an accountability report, or LPJ, before he steps down, to show how much his administration has spent during his time as governor. Joko, though, has rebuffed the suggestion.
The resignation letter will now be forwarded to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who will discharge Joko by decree. The decree will then be ratified by the Home Affairs Ministry.
