TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Negotiators from the Golkar Party’s (Golkar) quarrelling camps met today to discuss several agreements, including their commitment to supporting President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration for the next five years.
“Golkar will support Jokowi as the people-elected president for the next five years,” Golkar’s Bali Congress negotiator member Mohammad Suleman Hidayat said on Thursday, January 8, 2015.
However, Hidayat explained the commitment to supporting the president would not keep the party from criticizing the government should it issue any policy against the people's interest.
“Golkar is a strategic and critical partner for the government,” Hidayat said, adding that the commitment had yet to affect Golkar’s stance to remain with the Prabowo-led Red and White Coalition.
The meeting was scheduled to discuss a possible reconciliation between Aburizal Bakri’s camp that held the party’s national congress in Bali and rival Agung Laksono’s camp that organized its national congres in Ancol.
Both camps were discussing a number of agreements related to the party's position toward regional heads elections and its status at the Red and White Coalition.
