It Could Be Game Over for Jokowi, Says PDI-P Politician

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Effendi Simbolon said he felt empathy for President Joko Widodo, whom he described as facing hoards of problems only after 100 days since he took office.

“I personally feel sorry for him. Honestly, I’m worried, afraid,” he told a public discussion titled “Evaluation of 100 Days of Jokowi-JK Administration” at Paramadina University in Jakarta on Monday, January 25, 2015.

Effendi said he shared the same feeling with the public, which was now perplexed by the pandemonium on the country’s political stage and tried to pinpoint the root of the problems.

“I’m an optimistic person, but I think now I share the same feeling with you. We are baffled as to from which viewpoint we should look into these problems,” he said.

He said President Jokowi’s recent press conference on the standoff between the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police was too brief, and thus unclear.

“The president appeared on television for two-three minutes, but the message was blurry. He kind of said, you (KPK and the National Police) be good, get along. Is that it?” Effendi said.

Effendi said now was the right time for any side seeking to pressure the president, but he called on all parties to give the president a chance to get things right.

“This is like an airplane facing turbulence, hopefully we will see clear weather in a month. But there will be a second turbulence, that is if the revised 2015 state budget plan could not be ratified. It that’s the case, it’s game over for the government,” he said.
