TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Mark Barney Greenway, the vocalist of Napalm Death, has written an open letter to Indonesian President Joko Widodo to show mercy to British drug convict on death row Lindsay Sandiford.
"I am writing to you again to appeal for mercy and restraint, this time regarding the case of Lindsay Sandiford, a prisoner from the UK who it would seem is facing the prospect of imminent execution on the grounds of cocaine trafficking,” Barney wrote in his letter.
Barney asked Jokowi to consider his appeal, saying that Stanford was under pressure when she delivered the drugs and that her family was under threats if she did not comply.
The Denpasar District Court in Bali sentenced Standiford to death in January 2013. She pleaded guilty for smuggling 4.7 kilograms of cocaine worth around Rp24 billion into Bali in May 2012.
On Jan. 22, Napalm Death also wrote a letter to Jokowi through their Facebook account, requesting the president to spare the lives of Bali Nine prisoners on death row: Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran.
Napalm Death is a British pioneer band of grindcore genre formed in 1981. In some events, Jokowi was seen wearing a Napalm Death t-shirt.
