TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Tedjo Edhy Purdijatno, said that President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo had once raised question about the execution of drug convicts. Tedjo said that Jokowi wanted to know why the execution had not been carried out. Tedjo added that Attorney General Agung Prasetyo said that there were still legal proceedings that must be completed before the execution can be carried out.
"We have to be careful and not turn this into a problem in the future," said Tedjo on Thursday, April 2, 2015, adding that Jokowi never gave specific instructions.
Previously, National Police deputy chief Comr. Gen. Badrodin Haiti, said that the police had prepared a firing squad to execute death row inmates at Nusakambangan prison, Central Java.
"There are 130 [members of the firing squad] in total," said Badrodin. "The number is adjusted to the number of convicts that will be executed."
In addition to a firing squad, Badrodi said that 250 officers will also be deployed to secure the area around the execution site.
Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, death row inmates from Australia, have been confirmed to be included in the second wave of execution. Both are members of the Bali Nine drug syndicate who were caught smuggling heroin in 2005 and sentenced to death in 2006.
