TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Indonesian Military (TNI) Chief Endriartono Sutarto has said the government does not have any choice if the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) still wants freedom, thus making a failure of the peace accord. Waging a war? What else, the Chief said after attending a coordinating meeting of forestry affairs on Wednesday (9/4). However, the Chief said, TNI was still has waiting for the result of the Joint Council meeting represented by Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Martin Griffith from Henry Dunant Center and GAM representatives. Endriartono said if the three sides still wanted peace, they would keep trying to realize such a condition. But if one side refuses peace accord, the government has to take further steps immediately, he said. Regarding with this matter, the Chief said that it was up to government to make a political decision to solve the Acehnese conflict. We are ready, whatever the decision is, he added. Endriartono went on to say that the TNI wants to see GAM solving the Acehnese conflict peacefully by stop demanding freedom. He also said that GAM should dissolve its military force and surrendering its weapons by July 9. According to Endriartono, the two sides have to follow the measures stated in the agreement. The deadline of July 9, the Chief said, is demilitarization result to surrender weapons. If they [GAM] do not obey this, we cannot accept [their violation], he said. (Bagja Hidayat Tempo News Room)
