TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:President Megawati officially confirmed her plan to attend the celebration of East Timor Independence Day to be held in Dili on May 20, during a meeting with UN Secretary General Koffi Annan at the State Palace on Friday afternoon (17/5). The President is scheduled to fly to Dili on Sunday morning (19/5) and will make stopovers in Denpasar (Bali) and Kupang (East Nusa Tenggara). “I officially confirmed that I will attend inauguration of the new government in East Timor and the UN Secretary General welcomed this,” the President told reporters during a press conference at the State Palace. Annan said he was glad to hearing this decision, and called on Indonesia to let bygones be bygones and focus on the future. “Finally, I thank Madame President for making such a wise and brave decision to pay a visit to Dili,” said Annan. President Megawati went on to explain that during her meeting with Annan, they discussed the world-wide problems of terrorism and drugs abuse, as well as efforts needed to strengthen cooperation between the UN and Indonesia. The UN has asked Indonesia to tighten its relationship with ASEAN countries, especially Myanmar. Annan said he appreciated Indonesia’s efforts in trying to tighten cooperation with its neighbor countries. “Not only the ASEAN countries, but also Pacific countries, including Australia and East Timor,” he continued. The two leaders have yet to discuss the matter of East Timor refugees, but Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirajuda said it would be discussed on Saturday (18/5). (Dede Ariwibowo – Tempo News Room)
