52 Americans Living in Palu Prepare to Flee

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Bambang Satrio from theDepartment of Immigration in Palu commented today(12/10) that about 52 Americans living in Palu,Central Sulawesi, are preparing to fly home to Americain the face of increasing threats throughoutIndonesia. “They have already registered with theimmigration office. If anything happens, they areprepared to return home,” he said.

For the time being American residents still feelsufficiently secure in Palu. So far, there has been noreports about harassment or threats from locals. Apartfrom Americans, there are many other foreigners fromdifferent nations currently residing in Palu,including England, Germany, Japan, Canada, South Koreaand Malaysia. “The tourists and employees from the USstill feel safe enough; they have not yet beendisturbed despite the widespread rumors of 'sweepings'against US citizens in retaliation to the US attackupon Afghanistan,” he said.

The spokesperson of Central Sulawesi Police, HighCommissioner Agus Sugianto, said that the police wereenacting an instruction from the National Police andthe central government to provide security for theforeigners. “The security apparatus are ready toprovide security for foreigners at all times,” hesaid.
