TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:A total of 25 Indonesian citizens--consisting of ten women, 14 children and one local staffwere evacuated from Baghdad, Iraq, on Wednesday (22/1). Indonesian Ambassador for Iraq, Dachlan Abdul Hamid, reported this to Tempo News Room on Thursday (23/1) afternoon. Dachlan said there were 31 Indonesians living in Iraq (all of them are living in Baghdad), while there are around 37,000 Indonesian citizens living in the Middle East region. He went on to explain that the 25 Indonesians were evacuated due to the US plan to attack Iraq. The government had them driven by car to Amman in Jordan, about an eight-hour drive, and it was planned they will be flown to Jakarta on Thursday. Dachlan said the reason for the government evacuating the people to Jordan as a transit place was merely technical. There is a direct flight from Amman to Jakarta, he said. Regarding other Indonesian citizens that are still living in Baghdad, Dachlan said that the government is still preparing the evacuation while monitoring the situation. He added that the International Organization for Migration (IOM) did not provide assistance during this first evacuation. (Faisal-Tempo News Room)
