TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi is giving another chance to the national police to find the person who assaulted Novel Baswedan. Jokowi gives the police three months to solve the case.
"The chief of police had requested a six-month deadline. I gave him three—the technical team must be able to solve it by then," the president said at the state palace today, July 19.
Jokowi said that the attack on the KPK investigator is not an easy case to solve. The president said he will re-evaluate the police's work after the three-month deadline. By that time, he would decide whether there is a need to establish an independent team of fact seekers.
The president also added that the public should not always ask him, as president, to help expedite police investigation. "If every now and then you come to me, what job would the chief of police do?" he said.
A joint team formed by the chief of police had published their investigation results of the attack on Novel. The team worked for six months since January to find out who threw acid at Novel Baswedan on April 11, 2017.
In the report, the team admitted difficulties in finding the attacker, but conclude that the assault was motivated by revenge.
