Earthquake Shakes Papua's Fakfak Regency

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with 3.0 magnitude shook Fakfak Regency, West Papua Province on Saturday, August 24, at 16:16 East Indonesia Time (WIT), with no potential to a tsunami.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of Sorong stated that the center of the quake was at the coordinate of 1,97 South Latitude and 132,01 East Longitude. It was 109 kilometer north of Fakfak Regency at 10 km deep.
Based on the epicenter and hypocenter, the quake was categorized as the shallow one caused by an active fault.
Until now, based on its monitoring, BMKG said no aftershock will follow. The meteorology agency calls on the people to remain calm and not affected by baseless information.
Papua and West Papua were recently heated due to rioting in several cities allegedly due to racist acts thrown at Papuan students in East Java. The government cut off internet connection in the eastern regions in Indonesia following the transmission of hoaxes and fake news about the issue.
