TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Greenpeace Indonesia, along with 50 other environmental groups, took to the streets in Jakarta to participate in the global climate strike demanding world leaders gathering for a UN Climate Action Summit to adopt urgent measures to stop an environmental catastrophe.
"We urge the government to pay more attention to environmental issues and solve the issue. Many corporations and elements of the government lacks proactive participation in solving the climate change issue,” said Greenpeace Indonesia spokesman Arkiyan Suryadharma on Friday, September 20, 2019.
Protestors consisting of 200-300 people held a march from Central Jakarta's "taman aspirasi". The event is set to be held for a whole week starting from September 20, 2019, until September 27, 2019.
This event is held in numerous cities in Bali, Semarang, and Surabaya. However, it is not an everyday occurrence but will likely be joined by thousands of other activists.
"As the heir of the country's future, we must care more about the children's future. The effects of climate change do not only affect the present, but also the future ahead. I truly wish Indonesians can be open-minded to issues of climate change," said Arki.
