Jokowi Refuses to Issue Perppu to Annul KPK Law

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has asserted that he will not issue a regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to annul the Law on Corruption Eradication Commission or KPK that has been amended recently.
“There will be no Perppu,” said the President shortly in the yard of the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Monday, September 23.
Since its initial discussions, the KPK Law has stirred public controversies and rejected by many. Those opposing it considered a number of articles in the law would potentially weaken the institution and alleged the House had violated procedures during its dicussion process.
The Director of Constitutional Studies Center at Andalas University, Feri Amsari, said the President could issue Perppu as the requirement of "emergency situation" had been fulfilled, which was evident from a string of demonstrations and public unrest in several regions.
Previously, Jokowi reasoned that he approved the revisions of KPK Law since the regulation was already 17-year-old. He opined the improvement was necessary to produce effectiveness in fighting corruption.
