Stop Buying Global Brands, Buy Local Products: Minister

14 October 2019 23:00 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaTrade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita has called on mothers to purchase local products so as to curb imported products.

“[Buy] local products, leave behind those branded products. Starting from accessories, handbags and other nice things,” said the minister during the Shopee 11.11 event at Grand Hyatt, Jakarta, today.

In a rather unusual attempt to coax consumers into buying local products, Enggartiasto said Indonesian fashion brands could be considered as a first option.

“Prioritize [local brands]. Because if not us, who else would love local products,” said Enggartiasto.

The minister also took the chance to challenge e-commerce platforms, in this case, Shopee, to hold a one day event every month where only Indonesian brands were offered. Enggartiasto said this could boost local SMEs in the global market, which would be followed by the government by introducing accommodative policies.
