TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commenting on the World Anti-corruption Day, senior investigator of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Novel Baswedan opined efforts to combat corruption were in a poor condition.
“KPK is attacked from every corner, is weakened. The attacks are overlooked and it even seems there is a victory for corruptors,” said Novel in the KPK building, South Jakarta, Monday, December 9.
This sad situation, Novel mentioned, was evident in President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo's refusing to issue a regulation in lieu of law on KPK, given the fact that the newly-amended law was an attempt to clip the anti-graft body’s wings.
Additionally, the government did not show seriousness in preventing corruption practices. “Most programs did not run well. We need system improvement,” Novel asserted.
However, improvements in the system will not be effective if people do not have a sense of fear in committing the crime, he said. Novel added that they instead found a way to continue corrupting.
“Prosecution and prevention are carried out in a bid to make people afraid of committing corruption, and thus reject doing so,” Novel Baswedan said.
