KPK Calls for Law Banning Ex-Corruptors from Running for Election

11 December 2019 07:42 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) suggested the President and the House of Representatives (DPR) draft regulations restricting ex-graft convicts from running for the regional head election. The law is necessary as long as the government is serious about enforcing the ban.

“So it can be said that the ball is in the hands of President and DPR,” said the anti-graft body spokesman Febri Diansyah at his office on Tuesday, December 10.

Febri explained that the General Election Commission (KPU) had strived to prohibit ex-corruptors from contesting in elections. However, the Constitutional Court annulled the regulation on the grounds of human rights.

“Therefore the restriction regarding human rights must be ruled in a law,” Febri underlined.

The anti-graft body, he went on, had also tried to restrict former graft convicts from re-running the election by demanding the revocation of political rights so that people will have a choice to vote for those who never involved in a corruption case.

Previously, the KPU mulled over a regulation banning ex-corruptors from running for regional head elections. However, the rule was not stipulated in the KPU Regulation (PKPU) which was passed on Monday, dated December 2, 2019.
