Al Gore Address Indonesia's Coal in UN Climate Change Conference

11 December 2019 23:55 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former United States Vice President Al Gore said at the UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 that Indonesia's policy on coal as a source of energy must be replaced as he strongly argues against the use of the "troublesome" energy source.

Al Gore's message on Wednesday, December 11, 2019, was especially aimed at Indonesia as one of the world's largest coal exporters.

He said in the event's Indonesia Paviliun that "there must be ways to change that policy" as Indonesia is the only Southeast Asian country that can create a new construction for policies regarding coal.

AL Gore also acknowledged Indonesia's step in tightening the rules regarding palm oil fields, despite facing many challenges in applying the rules. Al Gore also reportedly said that Indonesia's deforestation has increased since the moratorium was announced.

Despite the pressures, Al Gore believed that Indonesia is committed to solving the climate crisis that has faced global nations. "It's how we can shift from using coal and no longer burn peatlands," he said.
