UN Women Praises Gojek's Efforts to Assure Women's Safety

11 December 2019 22:25 WIB

UN Women Representative for ASEAN, Jamshed Kazi, gives a souvenir to Gojek Senior Manager Corporate Affairs, Alvita Chen at a public discussion 1'6 days of Anti Violence Against Women' in Melawai, Jakarta, Tuesday (12/10/2019).

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coinciding with the 16 days of anti-violence against women campaign, the UN Women’s representative for ASEAN Jamshed Kazi, commended the proactive steps taken by Indonesia’s online ride-hailing giant Gojek in maintaining women’s safety in public spaces, stating that it is everyone’s right to feel secure.

“Zero tolerance towards harassment is a value that must be upheld by all industrial sectors,” Jamshed Kazi wrote in a press release acknowledging Gojek’s efforts in preventing sexual violence against women.

UN Women conveyed their appreciation to Gojek during the UN Women's After Dark Report Launch event held on Tuesday, Dec.11 at M Bloc Space, South Jakarta.

Gojek’s senior manager of corporate affairs, Alvita Chen, said that the initiative was due to their intention in maintaining women’s safety in public spaces, and also because it is everyone’s right to feel secure.

Going forward with their #UninstallKhawatir (Uninstall Anxiety) campaign, Gojek has launched several safety features since early 2019. Such as the “emergency button” that enables a special unit to be dispatched in the greater Jakarta area; “share trip” feature that allows passengers to inform relatives to track their journey.

Alvita added that Gojek bases its safety solutions from three foundations which are prevention, protection and handling.

Pulse Lab Jakarta, an innovation data lab, teamed up with the United Nations agency, UN Women Indonesia and the Indonesian government to carry out “After Dark ” research, which found one in three Indonesian women experienced violence in their lifetime, according to a nationwide survey commissioned by the Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry and conducted by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS).

These acts of violence would have occurred predominantly in urban neighborhoods, on the streets, on public transportation, and other public spaces.
