TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) commissioner Retno Listyarti expressed her appreciation towards Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim for dismissing the national examination or UN.
According to her, the policy is in line with the zone-based admission system in the student enrollment process (PPDB).
“That considers the distance of student’s home to school, instead of the national exam score as previously applied before the school zoning system,” said Retno in a written statement, Thursday, December 12.
However, KPAI lamented the drop in the percentage of the zoning system which had originally reached 80 percent after the three-year implementation. In the era of Minister Nadiem, the rate declined to 50 percent.
While in fact, she reiterated, many regions were capable and consistently implemented 80 percent of the system despite all challenges. That contradicted Jakarta which has far more schools but did not completely apply the system so that it still used the UN score for the PPDB implementation.
KPAI considered that because PPDB selection was based on the UN results, children who were having tutors could get high UN scores and entered public schools, while those from poor families needed to pay more for education in private schools.
