TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim planned on extending the internship period of university students to three semesters. He said the country’s industries had welcomed the plan and were set to employ the students.
Nadiem said industries had so far been indifferent to internship programs due to their brief period, i.e. around two to three months.
“We will not do this without prior discussions with industries. From the discussions we learned that the main reason industries were not really into internship programs was its short period,” Nadiem told a press conference at his office in Jakarta on Friday, January 24, 2019.
The former GoJek boss said the short duration had deprived students of learning further about real work situations and failed to generate much benefit to industries.
Nadiem Makarim said this policy would consequently get industries and universities work in tandem since the designing of curriculum up to workforce recruitment. Nadiem, however, added the three-semester internship program was non-compulsory.
