Gojek Says Tuition Payment Service Not Nadiem Makarim's Policy

19 February 2020 07:01 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaGoPay, Gojek’s digital wallet platform, clarified that its new service that allows users to pay school tuition fees via the app’s GoBills was not related to the policy of the Ministry of Education and Culture or other state institutions, said Winny Triswandhani as the GoPay head of corporate communication.

After Gojek founder Nadiem Makarim was appointed as Minister of Education and Culture, jokes about the possibility to pay tuition fees through GoPay were rife on social media. It turns out, the idea has become available.

Winny asserted the new service was the decacorn’s initiative to expand its services for users. Since early 2019, she added that GoPay had cooperated with 50 vocational high schools in North Jakarta on the implementation of cashless transactions related to education payment through QR code.

“GoPay had helped MI (religious elementary school) Miftahul Akhlaqiyah become the first religious school in Indonesia to use QRIS so that it can receive payments from any digital wallet through only one QR code. So this initiative has nothing to do with the Ministry of Education and Culture,” Winny underlined on an official statement, as reported by Bisnis, Tuesday, February 18.

Other than tuition fees payment service, GoBills served services for other bills payment such as water bills, electricity bills, up to zakat payment.

When asked for confirmation, the acting head of partnership and public relations bureau at the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ade Erlangga Masdiana, said that the new Gojek's service was basically a part of the inevitable innovation introduced by the private sector. A variety of technology innovations was necessary to further facilitate the community, he added.

“The ministry of course supports this service and it’s possible for any private party to cooperate with the government so long it is under the legal corridor and strengthens the community service,” Ade confirmed.
