TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim revealed three deadly sins in education based on his version, namely intolerance, sexual violence, and harassment or bullying.
“To me, these three sins are surely unacceptable,” said Nadiem at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Thursday, February 20.
He stressed that he was seeking formula to deal with those issues and calling on other ministries and regional administrations to come up with solutions.
According to the minister, the necessary steps to be taken would not merely a strengthening character program, appeals, or training but also strict sanctions. “We must impose a severe sanction for each stage of the three sins,” Nadiem remarked.
He admitted he was not yet necessarily able to solve rampant intolerance, sexual violence, and bullying cases in education institutions. However, the minister demanded his acts in tackling those problems must not be doubted.
“Don’t ever doubt my personal position regarding these three sins. They are of course red card,” said the founder of the country’s decacorn Gojek.
Nadiem recalled that the Directorate General of Higher Education at the Education and Culture Ministry had issued a number of regulations in light of sexual violence thus far. Yet he was informed that the law enforcement was not working.
“So we must push the law enforcement. But please give us time to find a way out. These [three misdeeds] have become an extremely severe outbreak,” said Nadiem Makarim who is a graduate of the prestigious Harvard University.
