Pandemic Cuts Indonesia's Foreign Tourist Arrivals by 30%

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of foreign tourists entering Indonesia in February 2020 declined sharply compared to January, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the central statistics agency, BPS, the number of arrivals was down 30.42 percent.

"The number of foreign tourist arrivals in February was only 885,100 people. This decline occurred at all entrances as the result of coronavirus," BPS chief Suhariyanto said on Wednesday, April 1.

The annual visits decline is 28.85 percent (yoy). Suhariyanto said that the biggest decline in visits based on country of origins is for Chinese tourists.

In February, the arrival of Chinese tourists in Indonesia dropped by 94.11 percent. The second biggest decline is for Hong Kong arrivals, which fell 93.12 percent.

However, there were slight increases in arrivals of tourists from Malaysia and Japan, because the coronavirus spread was not as massive in February.
